2008: Dec | Nov | Oct | Sept | Aug | July | June | May | April | March | Feb | Jan Back to Top OJAI, NOVEMBER 29 - ROSE VALLEY 33 MILE ENDURANCE RUN (88 finishers): 18. Luis Escobar 6:24 .. 35. Tom Himmelrich 6:48 .. 46. Tim Cullum 7:15. This race replaced the Santa Barbara Nine Trails race, which was cancelled because of the Tea Fire in the Montecito area. PT. MUGU, DECEMBER 7 - LASSE VIREN 20K (@ Sycamore Canyon State Park, 211 finishers): 1. Bobby Olivera/Ventura 1:10:52 (two time winner of the Brian Waterbury Memorial Rock to Pier race) .. 35. Jory Hallanan/Paso Robles-SLDC 1:30:51 .. 56. Hans Kardel/A.G. 1:38:57 .. 99. Damian Camacho/S.L.O. 1:46:34. From Jory Hallanan - "This was the 31st Lasse Viren 20K, held at Sycamore Canyon Park south of Point Mugu. I finishing 35th in a field of 200+ runners and first in the 58-62(?) age group with a time of 1:30:51. A 57 year old finished about 8 minutes faster so next year maybe I'll find something else to do that day. Just kidding - it's a great race, not to be missed in spite of the driving distance. The week before that, I helped with and ran the Paso Robles High School Wrestling Team’s Turkey Trot with just under 100 runners. Ivan Huff & Pepe Gonzales led the men's pack, running just over 37 minutes for the 10K course. Loryn Bedell led the ladies at about 44 minutes. Food 4 Less donated t-shirts & refreshments and the $20 entry fees were split between the wrestling team & the Food Bank. An added bonus for participating wrestlers was the opportunity to eat Thanksgiving dinner without worrying about making weight." RIDGECREST, DECEMBER 7 - HIGH DESERT 50K ENDURANCE RUN: From Dave Bourne, S.L.O. - "This is my annual report on the High Desert endurance run, I completed the 50K in a leisurely 7:19:12. My increased training efforts during the past year resulted in an improvement of - wait for it - 10 seconds! This was my 22nd completed ultra marathon (not counting 2 DQ’s) and my 6th High Desert 50K. The real ultra marathoner, Luis Escobar, finished in 4:05:50, 7th overall and second in a very tough division. This was his 2nd fastest of 6 completions since 2001 on this rugged course! Lou also completed the Rose Valley 33 Mile Endurance Run the previous weekend in addition to being its race director! Today’s race director Terry Mitchell and the Over The Hill Track Club put on very well organized runs each year, the 50K and a companion 30K. The aid station volunteers are great and a variety of ultra-runner food & liquids are provided. An extra treat is that several stations are festively decorated out there in the desert! The weather can present challenges, at least for a spoiled Central Coast resident like me. This year we had a warm 45 degree start rather than the usual low-30s. The sun was occasionally evident and the lighting was stunning in the valley and on the desert landscape and beautiful rocky outcroppings in the hills. During the day runners (and aid station volunteers) had to contend with fierce cold winds, especially near the ridges, and rain. Hail was also reported. Overall, not a bad day. 217 finished the 50K and 102 completed the 30K. There seems to be a loyal following of long-distance trail runners who return each December to renew friendships, meet new & interesting people, and enjoy so much of what the High Desert has to offer." (See the photos section of the SLDC web site to see Dave at Ridgecrest.) LAS VEGAS, DECEMBER 7 - LAS VEGAS HALF MARATHON: From Bill & Patsy Schackart, Santa Maria - "Patsy and I ran the half marathon on Sunday, December 7th at the Las Vegas Marathon/Half Marathon. My chip time was 1:51:24 and Patsy finished in 3:01:41. We were pretty excited as it was only the second half marathon we had ever run and we were totally awe-struck by the seemingly endless sea of runners, not to mention the 200 or so Elvises! We stopped by for a quick visit with Aeron and Marc Genet at the Running Divas booth at the Expo hall. We didn't know they were exhibiting there but remembered the brand from the November 2008 SLDC newsletter. Marc recognized the fantastic Ron Roundy Octoberfest shirts we were wearing immediately." SACRAMENTO, DEC. 7 - CALIFORNIA INTERNATIONAL MARATHON: (Addition to last issue) - 3477. Molly Montgomery/Shell Beach-SLDC 4:19:47 (9F-60/64). From Pat Connally, Paso Robles - "I just finished the Cal International Marathon and did a PR, at least since starting to run again 30 years after running in High School and College. It was a good race - a bit cold but didn't notice it much during the run. With the aid of a pacer, I finished just under 3:15. That qualified me for Boston but not sure if I will run it this coming year or not (I did it in 2007). I also ran the Turkey Trot in Paso Robles and saw a few other SLDC runners there - Steve Von Dohlan, Jory, Hallanan, & Ivan Huff to name a few." SPOKANE, DECEMBER 13 - USAT&F NATIONAL CLUB CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS: Past and present local and Cal Poly finishers: Open Men (10K) - 9. Sergio Reyes 31:19 .. 30. Philip Reid 32:07 .. 44. Jameson Mora 32:30 .. 79. Keith Hankins 33:18. (314 finishers) Masters Men (6K) - 15. Chris Schille 36:17 .. 18. Mike Livingston 36:41 .. Pete Bottomley (6th-45/49) 37:17 .. Mike Parrott (42nd-40/44) 38:47 .. Joe Fabis (8th-50/54). (252 finishers) Open Women (6K) - 3. Kara June 21:51 .. 119. Jennifer DeRego 24:42. (185 finishers) SAN DIEGO, DEC. 13 - FOOTLOCKER NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL XC CHAMPIONSHIPS (at Balboa Park): 1. Jordan Hasay 17:22 (2nd win, 3rd time in the top three, 4th time in the top ten; 12th National Championship overall including Junior Olympics, High School, and USAT&F Junior/Youth in cross country and track). Hasay wins Foot Locker title - Mission Prep senior caps high school career in style SAN DIEGO - With a closing surge, Jordan Hasay finished her high school cross country career in perfect step. Hasay overtook defending champion Ashley Brasovan with 150 meters to go after each emerged from a chase pack to prevail by three seconds to win her second girls crown in four years at the 30th annual Foot Locker National Championships. The senior from Mission Prep finished in 17:22 over the 5,000-meter course at Morley Field in Balboa Park in overcast and breezy conditions. "It was kind of crazy,'' said Hasay, who entered the race as the first four-time West Regional champion. "I didn't know if I was going to win the race until the last 100 meters. When I crossed the line, I was so happy.'' Hasay won the Foot Locker national title as a freshman in 2005, finished 10th as a sophomore, and was third last year. Brasovan, a senior from Florida, moved ahead of pace-setter Allie McLaughlin with 300 meters left while Hasay was also moving up. Then Hasay made her move on the final downhill, which she noted isn't usually her strongpoint. The race included three returning champions for the first time. Along with Hasay and Brasovan, there was 2006 winner Kathy Kroeger, of Tennessee who placed sixth (17:42). Hasay became the first two-time winner since Erin Sullivan, of Vermont, won back-to-back titles in 1997-98. Hasay was the first to win two titles that were not consecutive. (From The Tribune) Hasay Rides Late Surge to Second Foot Locker Title (by Fran McLaughlin, MileSplit.com) When precocious freshman Jordan Hasay announced her arrival on the prep running scene four years ago by winning the Foot Locker Championships, you had a sense that you were witnessing the beginning of something special. Putting a stamp on a high school cross career that needed no further validation, Hasay finished what she started, winning her bookend championship with a jaw-dropping late charge. With less than 300 meters to go, Hasay galloped past early race leader Allie McLaughlin, then caught and passed defending champion Ashley Brasovan to win in 17:22. One week after becoming the first four-time regional champion in Foot Locker history, Hasay became the fourth repeat girls champion and first since Erin Sullivan in 1998. Unlike Sullivan, who claimed back-to-back titles, Hasay had to wait three years before returning to the winner's circle. "When I won it freshman year, I didn’t understand the significance," Hasay said. "It's such an honor to win again. As a freshman. I was thinking maybe I could win four in a row. It's really difficult." Of course, if there was a year for a repeat winner, this would be the one with a trio of former champs in the 40-girl field. Apparently McLaughlin, who held on for fifth (17:34), never got the memo on how it was supposed to play out. For 2 1/2 miles the Colorado state champion, who only two years ago traded in her hockey skates to begin running, had plans of her own. A classic frontrunner, McLaughlin felt no need to change her style on the final day of the season. "That's how I like to run," she said. "This whole weekend everyone was saying this is not the race to do that. I already had my mind made up that I was going out hard. I usually respond to how fast I go out and I don’t have much of a kick so I need to build a lead. I get nervous or stressed when people get close to me so I try to stay away as a long as I can." Less than a half-mile into the proceedings, McLaughlin sprinted to a 10-meter advantage, challenging anyone to go with her, an invitation that went unanswered for much of the race. Cruising through the mile and two mile marks in 5:22 and 11:11, her cushion ballooned to 10 seconds before the chase pack led by Hasay, eventually rallied. The big question remained: Was it too late for someone like Hasay or Brasovan to reel in McLaughlin? "There were definitely points when I was doubting myself," said Hasay, who was considered by many to be the pre-race favorite. "When Ashley passed me with two miles to go, Allie still had a big lead and I was starting to get nervous." Hasay competed in the Olympic Trials over the summer in the 1500 and made the finals. That showed that she had gained the additional experience needed to compliment her speed. But after leading the chase pack’s pursuit of McLaughlin, Hasay was unable to cover a move on the course’s final climb by the defending champion as Brasovan stormed past Hasay, then caught and passed McLaughlin at the bottom of the final descent. With 600 meters remaining, Brasovan surged to drop McLaughlin, and in her mind, put enough distance between herself and Hasay. "I knew if it came down to the last 100, she would probably kick it in faster than me because she has good leg speed," Brasovan said. "But I knew the hills were where everyone makes their move so I was going to pound up that hill, take it hard from there, and race my heart out until the finish. I think we both had the same plan. At two and half miles, we were like 'OK, we need to get this girl now or she's going to take everything. We're both strategic racers, smart racers. We've been through a lot so it’s nice to have it come out like this." Heidi Harrison/Paso Robles-SLDC (& Team 4 Kids) 4:44:21 (marathon debut). From Heidi: Part 1 - "Running the NY City Marathon was like being in the most exciting dream I've ever had! The day of the race turned out to be cool, clear and windy. I was in the last group of people to take to the starting line on the Verrazano-Narrows bridge towards Manhattan and Central Park. There seemed to be endless supply of water, Gatorade and cheering spectators. There was also an abundance of "characters" running that included Lighthouse Man & Superman. I felt pretty boring by comparison. I even forgot to write my name on my shirt! But it was the most fun and I hope to do it again in the future. My goal was to finish between 4:30 and 4:45 and I did. I couldn't have done it without the support of the SLDC group! Many thanks." . . . Part 2 - "I was so glad to finish between 4:30-4:45 but I sure I cut it close. I started feeling knee pain and tight calves at about 22 miles and wanted to finish without pulling a calf muscle so I began walking 30-45 seconds per mile until the end and slowed the pace. I felt giving my legs a break was important. I don't think that was due to "the wall" and I had no problem continuing. The crowds were great and Team For Kids really took care of us, making it an overall wonderful experience. If anyone in the SLDC group wants to know more about this race, I'll be happy to talk to them! I'd recommend it to anyone." SAN LUIS OBISPO, SEPTEMBER 27 - MOUNTAINBROOK CHARITY CHALLENGE (@ Laguna Lake Park): From David Jackson, Morro Bay HS Cross Country Coach, "With the mid race leader missing the turn onto the second loop of the trail north-east of the lake, I was able to slide into a comfortable lead over the rest of the field. Four runners who are members of the cross country team at Morro Bay and also belong to SLDC ran this while the varsity was in LA running at the Bell-Jeff Invitational. Matt Ruane was here in his usual style. First, he finished the flat 5K around the park while pushing his double baby stroller, then he came back a few minutes later for the 10K that went up San Luis Mountain and back down. He won that one, thankfully without the kids in tow."

The annual Oktoberfest 4 mile road race kicked off at 9 AM with 244 participants, 55 of them affiliated with SLDC. The festival packed the sides of the streets along 2nd Street in Los Osos, which resulted in a wild scene of bottlenecking traffic. The weather was cool and calm, allowing for fast times and record setting efforts. Jory Hallanan, competing in the 60-69 division, ran 25:39 to break Neil Wilcox's 1999 record of 25:54. Robin Oswald, baby stroller division, pushed son Neil to a record time of 26:36. The previous record holder was Paulette Scoville in 1994, running 28:20. Brittany Hubrey walked to a record 35:35, lowering Barbara Spann’s 1997 time of 45:45. Cal Poly team members took 17 of the first 19 positions. Hasay Soars to New HS Record in Olympic Trials Semi-Final (by Leo Collins, July 07, 2008) This was a far different race than the quarterfinals when the older runners were content to let Jordan shoulder the pace. This time the favorites went out and raced and Jordan was relieved of the burden of leading. Jordan noted that she "had gotten a little excited" in the preliminary heat and the plan today was to stay relaxed. She remained well back in the pack running splits of 69 and 2:20 and then made her move in the final 400 meters. She was 8th as the bell rang with the top six advancing to the finals but quickly moved into seventh place. After coming off the turn with 300 meters to go, she picked off another runner and the fans were well aware of the effort of "that high school girl". The crowd roared as she raced through the final turn and caught Keri Bland of West Virginia. The noise from the crowd was deafening as Jordan then picked off Jenelle Deatherage in the stretch to place fifth with a HS record time of 4:14.50. Noting that the record had been in the back of her mind during the race, Hasay realized that it was within reach when she heard 3:22 at 1200. She had come here with the intention of breaking the record, recently set by Christine Babcock at 4:16.42. Babcock ran a fine 4:20 this evening but the night belonged to the tiny Californian, who smiled as she glided through the last lap. After the race, she posed by the timer on the track showing her newly established record as the partial fans yelled "Come to Oregon!" GUADALUPE, JULY 5 - GUADALUPE SPORTS HALL OF FAME HALF MARATHON

Complete results are at http://results.active.com/pages/page.jsp?eventID=1608631&pubID=3. RACE NOTES - Race turnout hit a record of 870 finishers on a perfect day for running from the start at the rock in Morro Bay to the finish at the pier in Cayucos. Four generations of the Waterbury family participated in the race and so did four of the winners (Jenna Kingma, Allysa Rueschenberg, Campbell Steers, & Jeremy Riley) of the Brian Waterbury Scholarship awarded annually at San Luis Obispo High School. Race winners Justin Banks and Jess Shaw both posted the third fastest winning times in the 39 year history of the race. Justin missed the course record of 30:44 by Ed Cadena set in 1977 by only 13 seconds and was only 8 seconds off Ben Martinez’ time from 1976 while Jess trails only USA international team members Linda Somers-Smith & Jill Boaz on the list of female winners. SLDC had 65 members and relatives in the race with a long list of award winners ranging from the youngest age category to the oldest. Among the 20 taking home medals in the large field of entries were Amaya Dempsey (1st, 10 & Under), Rachael Jelstrom & Marie Frye ((2nd & 3rd, 11/14), Kelda Wilson (1st-30/34), Liz North & Lori Hashim (2nd & 3rd, 45/49), Mary Cooper, 1st-50/54), Debbie Dorney & Marion McKenna (1st & 3rd, 55/59), Mary Stallard & Joan Waterbury (1st & 3rd, 70/79, and Helen Waterbury (1st, 80+) while for the men it was John Frye (1st, 10 & Under), Matt Ruane (1st, 30/34), Paul Lee (2nd, 45/49), Pat Connally (3rd, 50/54), and Frank Hutchinson, Bob Hotaling, & Alec Briones (1-2-3, 55/59). Although not an award winner, John Hogerheiden was first in two "oldest" categories. John ran in the first Rock to Pier race in 1970 and was wearing a shirt from the 1977 race. . . . Past winners among the men in today’s race were Paul Lee (1987, 1988, & 1992), Frank Hutchinson (1996), and today’s winner Justin Banks who also won in 2002. For the women, it was Mary Cooper (1992), Pam Boyles (2004), & Jenna Kingma (2007). . . 1971 winner Cheryl Bridges is the mother of 2008 Olympic team member and American 10K record holder Shalane Flanagan while 1984 & 1987 winner Jani Johnson is the mother of Olympic Trials pole vaulter Chelsea Johnson. LOS OSOS, JUNE 8 - 30TH JUNEFEST FOUR MILE RUN: (From David Jackson, MBHS cross country coach): "I am passing along results from the Junefest 4 mile road race in Los Osos. The weather was wonderful, sunny with a slight breeze. Over 150 participants finished the event. The track and field athletes of Morro Bay HS gathered prizes from throughout the county to be given out as awards for the top three in each age division and the top three in the stroller and walking divisions as well as for the overall top three for both genders. One age group record was broken while Jory Hallanan missed Neil Wilcox’ 60/69 mark by one second. The record was in the women’s 50-59 division and was set by Mary Cooper, who took just over a minute off her own record from 2007. She consistently races to the front of her division and is making a tradition of setting higher marks each time out. Her next chance will come on the last Sunday of October over the same course. The Octoberfest has a history of being the more largely attended of the two runs." (SLDC had 48 runners and family members entered with 28 of them winning awards. Place winners are noted below where there is room.)

POTOSI, MISSOURI, MAY 17 - BERRYMAN TRAIL MARATHON (109 finishers): 25. Jennifer Eichelberger (female winner by three minutes) 4:49:22 (new SLDC Missouri state record, no prior mark). When Jennifer moved to Illinois, she promised new records for several Midwestern states. This is her second, adding to the mark she previously set for Indiana. Times for both are slow because they are trail races. Her PR on a normal course is 3:52 set at Humboldt Redwoods in 2003 (the SLDC women’s record for that race). From Jennifer - "I kept up my tradition of running every marathon a little slower than my previous one but I was still the first female finisher! This will likely be the only time in my life that I'll be able to say that I won a marathon. A week has passed and I still smile every time I think about it! The course was a trail runner's dream: all single track through the woods with cool weather. It was beautiful and hilly with a few sections of deep mud due to heavy spring rains and several creek crossings. The Berryman also has a 50-mile, which does 2 laps instead of 1." Hasay wins for third straight year at Arcadia (from The Tribune) - Jordan Hasay called it "as exhilarating a finish as I’ve ever had." Hasay won the 3,200-meter run at the Arcadia Invitational in dramatic fashion, overcoming Woodbridge rival Christine Babcock in the final 100 meters to take the race in 10:03.07. "The crowd is great at Arcadia but this time it was amazing," Hasay said. "It was a big blur with the crowd screaming at the end." Hasay was a blur herself, breaking her own meet record by 0.63 seconds. She won in 2007 in 10:03.7 and in 2006 in 10:07.56. That means Hasay and Babcock - who was second in 10:04.03 - now own the top four marks in the meet’s 41-year history. "It was a big matchup for us today," Hasay said of herself and Babcock. "She’s a great runner and a great person. I’m really happy that we were able to race today," Hasay said. AVILA BEACH, APRIL 12 - 1 DREAM FOUNDATION 5K: 1. Ben Hait-Campbell 19:02 .. 2. From The Tribune - Hasay kicks off season with victory in Los Gatos: Jordan Hasay prefers track and field over cross country because she said the former is filled with excitement. At the center of that excitement Saturday at Los Gatos High was Hasay. The Mission Prep junior began her track season in dominating fashion at the 24th annual K-Bell Invitational where she won the 1,600-meter in 4:44.12. “It felt good,” Hasay said of track season beginning. “It wasn’t close to my PR, but it was good for my first day. I felt strong and it was a great meet.” Hasay, whose personal best in the 1,600 is 4:39.13, won by nearly 10 seconds. “I feel like my training’s where it should be right now,” Hasay said.

From DyeStatCal.com (by Rich Gonzalez) - Mission Prep junior Jordan Hasay threw on her spikes for a health test and gave two thumbs up to her performance, a 9:23.90 clocking for 3000 meters that moved her to #15 on the all-time high school list. Hasay, who suffered a foot injury in December, placed sixth in a mixed-gender all-comers race. "I was happy with the personal record but I was hoping to run a little faster," Hasay explained. "I ended up running way too fast at the start." Hasay estimated her opening 200 meters to be about 32 seconds as she got caught up as several collegians bolted out quickly at the race's start. Jameson Mora, a graduate of Canyon HS and Cal Poly, won in 8:35.72 as the first three athletes broke 8:50. Ben Siqueiros, son of Hasay's coach Armando Siqueiros and a friend who has paced her in time trials before, placed fourth in 9:19.29. "The main reason I ran was to test my foot," added Hasay, "and the good news is that I didn't do any damage to it so San Diego is still a go!" Hasay will run in the Juniors race at the USATF Cross-Country Championship this weekend. NATIONAL CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS: Junior Women's 6K (53 finishers) - 1. Jordan Hasay/Arroyo Grande-SLDC 20:32. From The Tribune - Mission Prep junior Jordan Hasay won the USATF Cross Country Championships Junior Women's 6K on Saturday in 20:32 at Mission Bay Park in San Diego, her second consecutive title. "As far as my cross-country season, it's the highlight because I didn't do as well as I hoped at Foot Locker," said Hasay. Hasay confirmed she will not compete at the World Championships in Scotland on March 30, although she qualified to do so. Instead, she will focus on her prep track season. Arroyo Grande native Hasay — running as a member of the San Luis Distance Club — was 13 seconds better than Stanford freshman Alex Gits. The junior national meet is for runners 19 and younger. SAN DIEGO - Jordan Hasay went with the lead pack this time and the strategy paid off. Ditching the front runner role she took at the Foot Locker race, the Mission Prep junior ran with the leaders this time through 4 KM and then pulled away to win the USATF Junior Women's Cross Country Nationals in 20:32 at Mission Park. "The pace was pretty slow - 5:30 for the first mile," Hasay said in a post-race interview. "The plan was for me to stay with the pack and make a move later." Hasay stuck with that strategy and reaped another national championship as a reward. Hasay gapped the rest of the lead pack just past 4K. "When I made a move, the crowd kept yelling to me how much of a lead I had. The course curved around and I could tell how much I was in front. I took it easy a bit down the stretch but my finish still felt strong." Saturday marked Hasay's first successful national title defense. "It feels nice to defend," she said. Hasay hopes to race at the United States Olympic Track and Field Trials in either the 1,500 or 5,000. She has met the 1,500 Trials "B" qualifying standard with a 4:16.98 but she hopes track preparation will help her cut her time and give her a better shot at making the 30-runner field. "I'm really happy about my time today. That's a big PR for me," she said. "It's hard to compare, though, because the race was at altitude last year." Besides being immensely satisfying, her win was painless. Swelling around a metatarsal bone on the ball of her left foot had limited her training for weeks. Hasay said she felt no pain during a 3,000 at Cuesta College last Saturday and none after the race at Mission Park. "The foot is doing fine now," she said. "That's a big relief." Hasay said she is not close to a decision on a college but "I'll visit Stanford, Oregon. and Washington during the summer. They're all strong distance schools. Beyond that I'm keeping my options open," she said. Jennifer Eichelberger/Cayucos-SLDC (7F-35/39) 4:37:02. From Jennifer: "I ran the Tecumseh Trail Marathon in southern Indiana this weekend. I'd recommend this run to anyone who loves trail running, does not mind dealing with some difficult footing, and enjoys running in cold weather. It was fantastic! Most of the run is on single-track trails through hilly forests (3500’ gained, 3800’ lost over the course). There are a lot of leaves on the ground this time of year, and roots and rocks can be tricky. I only had one wipeout and no injuries, so I considered the run a success. It is also hunting season in Indiana, so the race directors recommended bright clothing. We did see a few armed fellows who looked a bit bemused at the spectacle of runners in the forest but we were apparently too scrawny to be considered good game. The event has outstanding support with aid stations every 2 to 3 miles and friendly volunteers. As Janet Norem said about the Bizz Johnson Trail Marathon, this event is one of the few marathons where you might gain weight over the course. The aid stations were unusually well stocked with miscellaneous snacks as well as fluids. At mile 24, you could even stop for a hot chocolate or coffee and ginger snaps if you wanted to take a break before pushing on to the finish. Although I did not get a PR on this course, the fine Hoosier hospitality made it a great experience." DEATH VALLEY, DECEMBER 1 - DEATH VALLEY BORAX MARATHON (169 finishers): 36. From LetsRun.com - Jordan Hasay, the 2005 champ, took things out hard and immediately opened up a gap on the field in the first 1000m. Hasay went through the mile in 5:18 with the chase pack consisting of the other regional winners 20 or 30 meters behind. Hasay increased her lead during the second mile. Slowly, the chasers began to eat into Hasay's lead over the last mile with Florida's Ashley Brasovan leading the charge. Brasovan finally caught Hasay and while Hasay put up a fight, she could not keep up after her fast early pace. Brasovan got the win in 17:20, followed by the last 2 national champs, Kroeger and Hasay. Hasay gutted it out over the last stretch to get 3rd. The top 3 have now all won a national championship and are back next year to wage an unprecedented battle. (246 finishers) From Jory - “This hilly course begins and ends at sea level but elevates to 700’ in the middle. About seven miles is trail run with plenty of dry creek dips (this year) to break the monotony. About five miles, including the serious hill, is paved fire road. The winner, a former Buena High runner, ran the course in 67 minutes. In the early years, Lasse Viren participated several times but never won the race. Other prominent runners over the years have included Frank Shorter & Grete Waitz, who holds the women's course record. The men’s course record is 58:33 by Adrian Royle from the early 1980’s. . . It's late news but the Bearcat Wrestling Turkey Trot 10 K on Thanksgiving Day raised over $1200,split evenly between the wrestling program & Loaves and Fishes. Ivan Huff & Travis Hallanan led the participants with a 36:50 time. First woman was Marit Koch, coach of the Paso girls' cross country team. T-shirts & post race refreshments were courtesy of Food 4 Less. A good time was had by all and the wrestlers were able to eat later in the day and still maintain their weight classes.
