From MarathonGuide.com - "If the Battle of Marathon had been scheduled for today, the Persians would not have made it off their boats, such was the torrential rain at the famous location. It was left to the runners to battle the elements instead. On one of the toughest courses in the world, Josephat Ngetich improved his personal best to win in 2:13:44. At least the torrential early morning rain relented to a steady downpour for the start and the sun eventually broke through. After a flat start, which takes the runners around the tomb of the Athenian soldiers who died in the celebrated battle in 490 BCE, the road from Marathon to Athens climbs from 10k to 31k, which is a half-marathon of uphill. Then comes the gentle decline into the city with the finish at the Panathenaiko, the marble stadium built for the inaugural modern Olympics in 1896. Next year’s event promises to be even more special since 2010 is the 2500th anniversary of the Battle of Marathon, an opportunity for marathoners to pay their respects to the place where the event began." Thomas Reiss 4:36:33 (CR, won by 27 minutes) .. 28. Aileen Cota 8:12:23. From Thomas Reiss, San Luis Obispo, "Here is a write-up on the 50K trail race at Montana de Oro on August 23. This was my first hard test since returning from the Trail World Cup in France about 6 weeks ago. After the race in France, I took it easy for about 2 weeks. Then the past four weeks of training were also low mileage and intensity with an average of 42 miles per week for the last 4 weeks since it is late in the year and the World Cup was a highlight race with lots of training beforehand. I was excited to race in Montana de Oro since it is my favorite training run in the county and just a 20 minute drive from my home. I had run parts of the course pretty fast recently and felt confident that I could run a fast time despite the recent low training since I was willing to take some risk and go out hard from the start. There were close to 300 people at the start of the combined 8k, 12k, 25, and 50k. The weather was typical for Montana de Oro, overcast with low clouds from the ocean that broke just below the summit of Valencia Peak, the biggest climb of the race that left us with a beautiful view from atop. In the inland parts it got pretty warm later in the morning after all the fog had cleared. This overcast weather made it also very humid.
At 8:30 we were sent off by the race director. As usual, some kids in the 8k stormed to the front of the race but it all settled down about halfway down the bluff trail. I ran with Matt Ruane a friend of mine who ran the 25k. The pace felt good but not too easy. My goal was to take some risks and go out harder than I would usually do on a tough course like this one with a total of 6400’ of total up and down. On the way up Valencia Peak, I dropped Matt and passed all the people in front of me except the winner of the 8k, 12k and 25k. I hit the top of Valencia Peak in 43:14, fast for me on this climb but it came naturally without a big push. I then descended quickly until about a mile before the aid station by Spooners Cove when a runner in the 8k did not let me pass on the single trail. After asking 3 times for him to let me go by, I finally had to push him to get by. Anyway I came down to the aid station feeling good in 58:58, again very fast for this part of the course. I was thinking I should take a more conservative pace on the "Ridge Trail/Hazard Peak" loop. I did that and after a controlled but loop, I came to the halfway point in 2:07:01, 2nd place in the 25k (the old course record for the 25k itself, not the split in the 50k, was 2:11:13). That was so fast that I was hoping I could hold on and not lose too much on the second half of the course.
On the bluff going out, I started to feel a bit tired. Going up Valencia the second time, it got hard and I struggled a bit and needed to walk a couple of times. The time to the top was pretty slow but acceptable in 49:48. I was hoping to recover on the downhill and hit the aid station at 3:14:48. Going out the Ridge loop on the fire road, I started to struggle again. My split was 4 minutes slower then the first time around for the 3 miles until you hit the first climb, then I lost 3 more minutes on the first one mile climb, another minute on the descent, and another 3 minutes on the next one mile climb. I knew at the end of the of first climb in this loop that a sub 4:30 finish was out and most likely I would not run faster then the last time I did this. Anyway, a strong last 3 miles descending to the finish made it happen as I ran 4:36:33, breaking the course record for the "Fall" race by about 20 minutes and my own course record (for the "Spring" race) by 55 seconds. So, overall it was a good performance even if I had hoped to go a little bit faster. The next race on my schedule is the Tahoe Ultra 72 mile around the lake in September."

POZO, JULY 4 - 17TH ANNUAL POZO SALOON 5K: From Joe Rubio - "Running Warehouse hosted this race, which is set among the oak trees and rolling hills east of San Luis Obispo. It starts and finishes at the Pozo Saloon, a 150 year old former stage stop which still has the original front structure. The interior has the old wood flooring and ceiling, plus a funky old bar. The area behind the saloon features large oaks trees, a big grass area, and an industrial grade BBQ where we host the awards. The race started in 1992 when a few of us went to the saloon on the 4th of July 1991 and it was closed. The fact we didn’t have a 4th of July race in town led to the formation of the Pozo 5K. This year, the race served as a fundraiser for the Chris Jespersen Society which provides scholarships, educational opportunities, and funds to help purchase equipment for children with disabilities. The race is an out and back affair held on a flat country road which we’ve wheeled it a few times to ensure an accurate course. The course records stand at 14:11 for the men set by Louie Quintana in 1997 and 16:59 by Kara June in 2007. This year’s race drew 197 runners who were treated to a post race breakfast of tri-tip, ham, sausage, eggs, potatoes, biscuits and gravy, cinnamon rolls, yogurt, orange slices, and bananas. We try to have more prizes than runners and succeeded with everyone who stuck around for the awards ceremony going home with a merchandise prize of some sort. This year’s race raised about $2,000 so if you happen to be in San Luis Obispo next 4th of July, make plans to attend the 18th Pozo 5K. We’d love to have you in this low key event that raises money for a good cause." POZO SALOON 5K

Rock to Pier race notes - The best beach conditions in race history helped two national caliber runners crush Ed Cadena’s 32 year old course record of 30:44. Olympic steeplechaser Billy Nelson (Taft HS/University of Colorado) took 24 seconds off Ed’s record but won by only eight over Adams State All-American Brian Medigovich (SLOHS ’05). As a high school student, Nelson was a two-time winner of the Cal Poly Invitational and then ran the City to the Sea Half Marathon the next day. His previous Rock to Pier race was in 2001 when he was third in the 15/18 age division in 34:12. . . Among the entrants were John Hogerheiden, an entrant in the first Rock to Pier race in 1970, just edging Lou Squazzoni whose first Rock to Pier in 1971 started a string of 23 consecutive finishes. Lou, who turns 80 in August, was second in another category as he was two months younger than the oldest entrant, Bill Winstanley who turned 80 in June. . . On hand after a 25 year absence from racing was Pete Phillips, wearing the original SLDC singlet made by long-gone San Luis Athletic Supply. Pete ranks 5th on the all-time SLDC Boston Marathon list with his 2:45:17 in 1983. . . Past winners in the field were Paul Lee, Frank Hutchinson, Diane Dixon, Mary Cooper, & Jill Boaz. . . Billy Nelson’s win means both course records are held by Olympic athletes as the women’s mark is 34:53 set in 2003 by 1996 Atlanta marathon team member Linda Somers-Smith. . . Today’s women’s winner Jill Boaz was a member of three U.S. teams in the marathon at the World Track & Field Championships, competing in Edmonton in 2001, Paris in 2003, & Helsinki in 2005. . . SLDC had award winners ranging from the youngest age group (Amaya Dempsey, 10 & Under) to the oldest (Bill Winstanley, 80+). . . Past Rock to Pier winners Cheryl Bridges & Jani Johnson both have daughters who will be representing the USA in the World Track & Field Championships in Berlin in August, Shalane Flanagan in the 10,000 & Chelsea Johnson in the pole vault. . . Julia Uyttewaal, second in the girls 15/18 division, is the recipient of the 2009 Brian Waterbury Memorial Scholarship at San Luis Obispo High School. . .. . SLDC’s best awards showing was in the men’s 50+ categories with 4 of the 6 winners and several more close behind. The club had 7 of the 10 places overall between 40th - 49th. . . A big thanks to race director Karen Sweeny of the Morro Bay Recreation & Parks Department for her work on this great race named in Brian’s memory. SERRE CHEVALIER, FRANCE, JULY 12 - INTERNATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF ULTRARUNNING’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP TRAIL CHALLENGE: 1. Thomas Lorblanchet/France 6:38:18 .. 25. Thomas Reiss/Germany 9:28:46. From Thomas, "I just got back from my trip to Europe to race at the 2nd IAU Trail World Cup held in Le Monetier in the French Alps. The course was way harder then I imagined in my wildest dreams and not a course suited to my running style but I am proud of the fact that I finished and placed 25th place at the World Cup. Not too many people get to go and represent their country at this level of sports competition. Here’s the longer story:
After a flight from SF to Frankfurt, I got picked up by my brother, then made the drive to my sister’s home in Germany. I stayed there for a couple of days before leaving for the French Alps, 8 hours of driving from Germany through Switzerland and into France. We arrived in Le Monetier, checked out the village, and met up with my teammates from the German National team. We checked in for the race and then drove to the hotel. After breakfast Saturday morning, we went to explore parts of the course. We drove up the famous "Tour de France" mountain climb of Col de Gallibier. What we saw of the course looked challenging and rugged but not too bad. As I realized during the race, what we saw was by far the easiest portion. After a nap in the afternoon, dinner, and the technical meeting, we went to bed early to be ready to wake up at 3:30 for the 5:00 AM start.
There was a lot of energy at the start with almost a thousand starters total between the World Championships and the open race, tons of spectators, media, flashlights, cameras, etc. at the start in the dark. The race began and people started out like it was a road marathon. I told myself to take it easy until the daylight and the first climb. At mile 3, it seemed like there had to be a hundred people in front of me. I tried to follow someone with a headlamp and ran about 8:30 pace on the first flat part of the course. The first climb was great for me with the right grade and good footing. I passed at least 30-40 people on that climb and felt good. At the top the first aid station, I filled my bottles and went on. From here, they made us go to the top of the "Col de Gallibier". This part was so steep and slippery with sand and gravel that sometimes I had to move almost on all fours and pretty much crawl. Needless to say, I did not enjoy this part. From the top we had the steepest downhill I have ever gone down, way too many rocks and gravel for me. Sometimes it did not even follow a trail, it was just straight down the hill via the shortest way. Here is where I started to feel not that great. I was about 2.5 hours into the race - too early to feel bad.
The next climb up to the "Col de Rochilles" started out ok but then, instead of staying on the gravel switchbacks, they had us go up on a steep single trail. Here is where I started to get really tired. Next was a steep descent to the 2nd aid station at mile 23. I was about 1.5 hours behind my schedule and figured the adjusted goal is just to finish. At this aid station I talked with our team manager and he said he was not sure if I had dropped out since I was so far behind schedule. I told him that I was determined to make it to the finish. On the next climb I wished I had not said that since it was the steepest climb I have ever gone up, including hiking trips with almost 3000 feet of uphill on hard packed sand, rocks, and gravel. At the end, we had to free climb some parts and then at the beginning of the descent, we had to hang on to ropes. I was really destroyed by the end of this climb. I started slowly running downhill to reach the 3rd and last aid station. One more climb, one more descent over the next 10 miles, and I will be done. I filled up my bottles and told my team manager that I will make it to the finish. One more long climb and then an enjoyable flat stretch along the river. Finally I arrived at the "Col de Buffere" and I had made it to the top of the final climb! I got into the groove a bit and was running again at 8 minute pace, passing people on this part. It still seemed like it was never ending, especially since you could see the finish from the top of the mountain when you still had 3 miles left to go. Finally, I was inside the village and on the home stretch. I MADE IT! I was so happy to be finished and done. I found out that one of my teammates had the race of his life and came in 3rd, winning the bronze medal. I went to the hotel to shower and change and then back to the awards ceremony to see my friend get the bronze medal. Overall it was a great experience to represent my country, race at the World Cup, and get 25th place. It was just very hard getting there. And so it’s to the next race."

From Letsrun.com - "The two-time Foot Locker Cross Country champion didn’t think twice about taking the lead as she did right so from the gun. Attempting to break Melody Fairchild’s record of 9:55.92 from 1991, Hasay took the mile out in 5:01. By then, she had created a sizeable gap between herself and 2007 National Champ Ashley Brasovan and the nation’s leading two miler, Emily Jones. Despite slowing a bit in mid-race, Hasay proved that she is in a class of her own, averaging about 37 second laps around the 200m track. She broke the tape in 10:10.89, all alone and 14 seconds ahead of second place. "Indoors is a lot different than outdoors," said Hasay, "More turns and I felt like I wanted to be done half way. But I am happy with it." SAN FRANCISCO, MARCH 15 - EMERALD ACROSS THE BAY 12K (Pacific Association Grand Prix Series race): 1. Philip Reid/S.L.O. 35:57 .. 2. Sergio Reyes/Los Osos 36:00 .. 12.
